Flower Mound Boy Scouts ‘JustServe’

With dirt in their fingernails and black paint on their clothes, it’s just another Saturday for Flower Mound Boy Scout Troop 292.

A group of teens and members of Boy Scout Troop 292 spent their Saturday morning cleaning up debris and painting the fence at Flower Mound’s Peacock Park off Stanford Dr.

Boys Scouts are taught to do a good turn daily. While serving is nothing new for Boy Scout troops, the way in which they found the service was unique. They utilized a website called JustServe.org – a website sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help volunteers find opportunities to serve right where they live.

JustServe is a free service that allows any organization or individual to enter their zip code and see a list of service projects and volunteer opportunities that are available right away.

“We want the boys to have regular opportunities to serve,” said youth leader Richard Murray of Flower Mound. “We went on JustServe and saw that Keep Flower Mound Beautiful was in need of someone to paint the fence at Peacock Park. We jumped at the chance.”

“I think it’s great that we could improve an area that’s right in our backyard,” said Rocco Cooper, an 8th grader at Shadow Ridge Middle School. “I remember playing at these parks when I was a little kid. I’m grateful that we could play a part in helping them look new again.”

JustServe provides opportunities to relieve suffering, care for the poor and needy, and enhance the quality of life in the community. The service is currently available in North America and England, and those interested can log onto JustServe.org to find a local opportunity.
