Latter-day Saint Honored with Prestigious Catholic Scouting Award for Interfaith Leadership

When Jamie Langston first got involved with the 10 Commandments Hike in Flower Mound, she saw it as more than just a scouting event—it was an opportunity to build bridges between faith communities. Now, after years of dedicated service, she has been awarded the Bronze Pelican, a prestigious honor from the Fort Worth Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting, recognizing her efforts in fostering interfaith understanding.

For the past 20 years, the 10 Commandments Hike has been a spring tradition, bringing together multiple faiths along the Flower Mound trail system for a three-mile Saturday walk. Scouts hear about the 10 Commandments from various religious perspectives, with participation from Catholic, Baptist, Islamic, Jewish, Lutheran, Methodist, non-denominational, Pentecostal, and Presbyterian communities. The diocese-sponsored hike has been led for many years by Bob Hammers of Catholic Scouting.

Langston is a longtime supporter of scouting with deep ties to the program. Both of her sons are Eagle Scouts, her daughters completed the Adventure Scout program, and she served as a crew nurse for four Philmont hikes. However, it is the interfaith aspect of the 10 Commandments Hike that she finds especially meaningful. She values the opportunity for scouts and their families to learn about different faiths and ask questions in a welcoming environment. Representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she coordinates speakers, arranges lunch, and serves as both safety coordinator and nurse for the event.

An Honor for Outstanding Service in Scouting

The Bronze Pelican Award, established by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, commitment, and dedication to supporting the principles of Catholic scouting. Recipients are nominated by members of their local scouting council, and their contributions are reviewed before final selection by the diocese and scouting leadership.

Langston was honored at a recognition dinner on Jan. 26, 2025, hosted by Good Shepherd Catholic Community and Knights of Columbus Council 15789. The award was presented by Fr. John Mark of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Colleyville, Texas. Event organizers commended her efforts, stating: “Her work has fostered mutual respect and understanding among various faiths that regard the 10 Commandments as central to their teachings.”

The Bronze Pelican Award serves as both a token of appreciation and an encouragement for others to engage in faith-based service, empowering young people with values of faith, character, and community involvement.
