Family finds fun despite Quarantine
Lisa Dixon of the Fossil Ridge congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints developed an innovative and entertaining way to keep her family sane during the COVID 19 pandemic quarantine.
“We’ve tried hard to find the positives in this,” said Lisa Dixon, mother of three boys.
Normally, the Dixons are a very structured family with lots of school and sports obligations. When everyone ended up at home with everything in their lives canceled, Lisa knew she had to do something to keep them engaged, educated, and sane.
That’s how the Dixon “Theme Days” was born. Each day is a different place or subject, and they stay busy doing activities she plans that have to do with the theme of the day.
“We have had some fun memories made because of it,” said Dixon. “We’ve spent a lot of time outdoors, hiking and fishing. All the stuff that we normally wouldn’t have time for.”
Despite being a family of all boys ranging in ages from a grade-schooler to a senior in high school, “Frozen Day” was a surprisingly popular theme. Maybe this is because they got snowcones from takeaway and an ice chest full of snowballs for a Texas-style snowball fight.
“I would just say do what works for you. For me, planning parties and activities is really fun; it’s something I enjoy,” said Lisa. “But if this doesn’t work for you, find something else that makes each day seem a little bit more exciting that gives you something to look forward to.”
“I feel like we don’t need to live up to each other’s expectations,” said Dixon. “Some people like cleaning out their closets. That’s not me, so instead I search Pinterest for fun things to do.”
