LDS Youth join forces with Mid-Cities Care Corps to aid Elderly

Over one hundred and fifty young people, aged 14-18, from Colleyville, Southlake, Grapevine, and Keller joined with local charity, Mid-Cities Care Corps, to serve dozens of elderly people in need across Northeast Tarrant County. The mission of this valuable organization, which was established in 1981, is to work to preserve the independence and well-being of the elderly in our area.

The young people, who are members of The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints, were participating in a weekend conference with an Olympic theme. They focused on working together to be stronger and more committed to their Christian faith. Along with their adult leaders, over 150 of them gathered early Saturday morning in a local chapel to listen to an address by Duane E. Buuck, the Executive

Director of MCCC. He told them about the history of the non-profit and the immense need that it fulfills for so many elderly people. Some are home-bound, ill, or dealing with disabilities that don’t allow them to take care of their homes and yards, and so they need young, energetic people like these youths!

The youth set out and worked for hours at eight homes and in yards, raking leaves, disposing of waste, trimming and pruning, and leaving every home looking neat and tidy. Many residents were able to come outside to watch and chat with the youth as they worked. They shared stories and laughs, and everyone came away feeling blessed by the experience.

Mitch Hill, the president of the Colleyville Stake Young Men’s Association, served alongside the youth at a home in Haltom City. “Our 16 teams worked for hours, in less-than-ideal weather! The morning started off a bit rainy, but the sun emerged, and it was glorious working outside with the kids. The seniors were extremely appreciative and loved interacting with our youth, telling them stories and thanking them. They even told me that the kids ‘have good potential.’ We had so much fun. Many of the youth shared afterward that the service had a big impact on their outlook.”

“I felt so much love for our senior friend while we cleaned up her yard,” Audrey Horn, a 17-year-old from Keller said. “She was so cheerful and made us feel good while we worked. She told us some funny stories and we laughed together. I’m so glad I got to help her out!”
