Local Families Pack Food and Fun into a Night of Service
Frisco, Texas. Three families from Prosper recently joined in with Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco for their annual “Big Pack Frisco,” a MobilePack event headed by Feed My Starving Children in Richardson. Volunteers packed over 595,000 meals for kids in need across the globe over the two-day food packing event.
Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a Christian-based nonprofit committed to feeding the hungry in over 70 countries worldwide. From its humble beginnings in 1987 inspired by founder Richard Proudfit’s interactions on a mission trip to Honduras, FMSC now packs hundreds of millions of nutritious meals each year and “works with food distribution partners that stay with communities for the long haul, empowering them to move from relief to development,” according to their website.
Annilee Cook, a mother of four who organized the Prosper group’s efforts, said that she had a feeling that “getting the kids’ friends and their families [together] would make it more memorable and fun for everyone!” She also reflected, “My kids were shocked that these little bags of food feed a child for a whole day. It really makes them think a bit about how blessed they are.”
Luke Compton, a seventh grader, and his sister Emma Jane, a high school sophomore, loved making a difference in people’s lives. Luke said, “It was fun that we all worked together.” He added, “The best part is helping people in need.”
Children and youth truly do make a difference. The annual Global Youth Service Day sponsored by Youth Service America can help foster a spirit of community and service and teach youngsters that service does not need to be complicated.
