CARROLLTON, Texas – Volunteers gathered in large numbers at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Carrollton on Saturday, April 12, for back-to-back “Build Day” events in support of Global Youth Service Day. This year’s project benefited Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit organization whose mission is that “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”
The Church’s youth teamed up with young people from the Islamic Association of Lewisville-Flower Mound (IALFM) for a morning session from 9 a.m. to noon. An additional afternoon session followed.
Nicole Couch, JustServe.org specialist for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “One of our biggest projects every year is for Global Youth Service Day, and to have over 150 kids participate just in the morning is fantastic. Global Youth Service Day is a worldwide event each April for youth ages 5 to 25. We’re excited to see our youth work hard to build these beds, support this cause, and collaborate with the youth from IALFM.”

Richard Murray, a local organizer for the Church of Jesus Christ, added, “It’s been a special experience for everyone involved—especially the youth. These beds go to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have one. I’ve personally delivered beds to families in need, so I’ve seen the impact firsthand. It’s a great opportunity to be here today and see what we can accomplish together.”
The youth shared their own reasons for participating. Ayoub, a student from IALFM, said, “It brings the community together and lets us give back.”
Madeleine, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, added, “I came to help kids who don’t have beds. It’s really special. I know God is helping these kids, and we’re part of His work.”
Reese commented, “This is such a cool experience. I’m glad we get to help kids and take time out of our day to serve.”
In addition to building beds, the event included a donation drive for new twin-sized bedding, including sheets, quilts, comforters, and standard-size pillows. Those who couldn’t attend the build could still contribute through the drive.
