The end of the school year has been heartbreaking for many of the seniors of the class of 2020, especially when school ended abruptly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. No less disappointed are the parents of the seniors who feel cheated of celebrating the important milestone of high school graduation with their children.

To add a little balm to this wound, the youth leaders of the Fort Worth North Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized a drive-by graduation celebration at two different locations on June 5-6.

“We are so proud of our graduates. These parades are a safe and fun way to honor them. They have worked really hard and it seemed right to end with this celebration,” said Laura Puckett, Stake Young Women’s President.

Those attending showed their support for the graduates by driving through the Church of Jesus Christ’s parking lots at the Ft Worth and Saginaw locations in decorated cars, honking their horns, cheering, and handing out cards and gifts. Each senior who participated had a canopy to display their accomplishments. Organizers and volunteers made balloon arches representing each school.

“It was fun making these arches for our seniors,” said a volunteer. “This is the least thing I could do since so many activities were taken away from them.”

The enthusiastic response of the seniors representing 11 schools made it all worthwhile.

“I’ve definitely missed seeing all my friends,” said senior Megan Winzenz, “but this has been a fun night.”

Lily Nichols, the mother of Rene Nichols, spoke for many of the parents when she said, “I really hope they carry this tradition forward. This has been a great night celebrating our seniors. It’s nice to see something positive come out of a crazy year.”
